Sometime last spring I posted a plea for votes, asking people to actually see what was going on in my parent’s basement. UGH! I got everything from sympathy votes to palpable shock & awe – it was a jungle that needed to be cleared. You spoke (well, so did the photos) and they listened! I won!
I’m not sure if it was the cobalt blue shag carpeting, the lime green shutters or the jungle inspired print wallpaper, but this 1970′s bathroom won the Designer’s Grand Prize of $3,000.00 in the “Ugly Bathroom Contest” and the prize was put towards products to remodel my bathroom – all courtesy of the Inspiration Design Center (IDC) of Burnsville. It was the designer’s choice – and how could it not be? With some hard work and an eye for design, I felt prepared to turn this bathroom into a clean and up-to-date spa retreat!
Like most remodeling projects, I was nowhere near prepared for the months it would take to finish the project. I would like to say that it was an interesting process, but in reality, most remodeling projects are frustrating. I can say with genuine appreciation, the assistance I received from Alison and Krista at IDC were amazing. I knew what I wanted from the moment I raised my embarrassed hand to claim the “Jungle Room” was mine at the cocktail party where winners were announced. From then on, it was my husband and I who were rolling up our sleeves - well, mostly my sainted better half.
When you win $3,000.00 worth of Kohler products, tiling and custom cabinetry, you have to be wise to stretch your remodeling dollar. You never quite anticipate the things you find beneath the carpeting or behind the walls. We found plumbing and electrical issues that required full updating, hours of extra labor in unexpected demolition, and pure sweat equity to ‘do it right’, rather than place a pretty Band-aid over a festering wound (well, you get the idea).
”DIY” work does come with its benefits though. My husband’s attention to detail and right brained craftsmanship always taught me to measure three times and cut once, while anticipating each project and adding 20% more time than you first thought. His skill for custom tiling and woodworking was worth every deep sigh and stink-eye I received during the months of renovation. Nothing is easy when you’re going for quality – but I think we’re both very pleased at what we accomplished this winter and spring.
I’ve got to say that Inspiration Design Center (IDC) took proper care of me. They rolled with the punches and in the end, I think we’ll agree that simplicity won out and our bathroom looks spectacular. It doesn’t have all the fine accents yet – but let the room speak for itself. Rather than add artwork on the walls and ‘cover up’ our hard efforts, I thought I’d post pictures that clearly speak to the space.
If you want to connect up with someone of both knowledge and character – then call Alison at IDC for a consultation. If you want beautiful granite, custom cabinetry, lighting, plumbing and a showroom full of ideas, then Inspiration Design Center (IDC) is your place to go. Whether you can custom create the space on your own or you need assistance in finding the right person – there’s nothing more important than trust with your Designer. I think you’ll find the right combination at Inspiration Design Center for any home remodeling project.
